Dr. Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, Prime Minister of Yemen, lauded the UAE’s support for his country, stressing that it has provided historical support for Yemen, especially over the past decade

His country would have collapsed if it was not for the support of friendly countries and economic reforms, he added.

During a session at the World Government Summit, Dr. Saeed stressed that his country has suffered from the war with the Houthis over the past decade, which negatively affected its internal and international situation.

“Yemen has recently been through a critical period, then the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to further deterioration,” Saeed said, highlighting his country’s efforts to achieve stability and its talks with the World Bank, as well as the role of friendly countries in supporting Yemen.

Saeed highlighted the procedures undertaken to support Yemen’s economy, including reducing public spending when the state budget had significantly declined, noting that its budget deficit is 80 percent.

Yemen held talks with the World Bank and the Arab Monetary Fund, being two sources of direct aid, he added. It had reduced its deficit and implemented economic reforms, which saved it from collapsing.

Dr. Saeed highlighted his recent meeting with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, lauding the UAE’s role in constructing the first and largest 120-megawatt power plant in Yemen.

He noted that the Ma'rib Dam was established by the UAE, leaving a historical footprint in Yemen, and it is now financing the Hassan Dam, which will represent progress.
