Wake Up Call: Breathe to Heal
Brief

When people are asked about what they love they answer instantaneously, but when asked about what makes them happy cannot give a clear answer. Max Storm, writer, teacher and speaker, talked about happiness as an important subject. He provided insights about the nervous system and how breathing exercises can help us relax and get rid of anxiety.

Strom listed four main desires of every human being; namely, to live, to be happy, to gain knowledge, and to love. He said that most people either talk about either success or pleasure but not about happiness. He believes that happiness is about having a meaningful life. People acquire meaning through love, spirituality and otherwise; but their definition of happiness changes with age. He also mentioned that 25-30% of US urban citizens use medications for anxiety and depression, and the same goes for most countries all around the world.

Strom cited two main reasons for having cases of unhappiness like anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks and depression. The first reason is that people have unreconciled emotions from the past, and men are taught to suppress certain emotions. The second main reason for having this kind of psychological illnesses is isolation. Although people live in an increasingly connected world, anxiety according to his personal perspective is not tangible. Strom stressed that people need to learn more about the nervous system and draw knowledge from inside of themselves.

He concluded his session with a breathing exercise by stressing that such a procedure is beneficial in relieving tensions, stating that results usually unravel in a span of 10 minutes. Science has acknowledged the benefits of controlled breathing, and a case in point is when pregnant women reported that it helped them relieve labour pain. US Ministry of Defence now advocates breath work to cure PTSD.
