The Power of Play
Brief

In a session titled “The Power of Play”, Hanan Al-Hroub, Global Teacher Prize 2016 Winner asserted that playing does magic in the classroom; magic that lies in the hands of teachers. She said that people are subject to natural and manmade circumstances around them, which is the starting point that force people to develop their own tools for survival.

As a Palestinian teacher living under struggle, Al-Hroub said she sometimes had to teach in houses, on the street, and various locations then the traditional school setting. The idea behind “Play and Learn” methodology is to isolate children from circumstances outside the classroom. The idea started when her children were subject to trauma which affected their focus; a problem that needed solving. Al-Hroub said “Play and Learn” methodology succeeded with very limited resources. Teachers cannot guarantee the safety of children outside the classroom, but ought to make life fun and joyous inside it, shaping their personalities and pathways that they are going to tread in the future.
The “Play and Learn” methodology is based on a comprehensive life system within the classroom that works through using toys and games to instill values and morals in students. For example teaching them to play a role and being part of a team that respects and tolerates each other. Ms. AL-Hroub stated that, “My slogan is to use “Play and Learn” to limit violence”. Moreover, noting that the methodology is very simple depending only on recyclable tools, papers and toys. Also, it can be used with children with disabilities, refugees, and children undergoing extraordinary circumstances whether in rich or poor countries. Teachers must be trained to use “Play and Learn” by focusing on playing different roles; actors, clowns, and therapists, before they are sent to the classroom. Furthermore, she highlighted the role of government in teaching and motivating teachers who excel to make a difference.
