The Global Revolution of Innovators

Brief

Mrs. Kathleen Kennedy, President of the MIT Enterprise Forum, talked about two programs MIT has that support innovators make radical change in the world and are supposed to help innovators face challenges in the world, like climate change and energy problems.

“Many ideas are not making it to market, because they need billions of dollars to actually scale what they are doing, they need different kinds of talent…they need patient capital…they need special equipment,” Kennedy said. She added that what MIT does to support this “new type” of entrepreneurs in a world that has nine million people who need energy, water and food, is to empower them to be able to make their dreams a reality.

Firstly, The Engine program, which has four main components. The first part is a long-term funding of $150,000,000 and building a syndicate of investors who understand the developments that need to happen are as important as their need to make revenues from their investments. The second part is an incubator and accelerator program for the startups themselves. The third component is the engine room to provide equipment, expertise and services for startups to rent for access. This includes assembling a crew of experts on different types of technology who advise innovators on how to build their companies. The fourth part is “invention education” for kids to believe that “what they can think of is possible,” the speaker said. Furthermore, Kennedy said information about The Engine is available on Engine.xyz.

The second program is Climate CoLab, which aims at engaging all people to make a change regarding the issue of climate change, Kennedy said. It aims at using people experienced in climate challenges to operate in preparing plans on a global level then integrate them into national plans, adding that people from 170 countries are working on it already.

Kennedy concluded the session by urging the audience to become engaged and be part of the solution and seek the available tools and use them to make a change.
