The Future of Urban Mobility
Brief

Mr. Travis Kalanick, CEO and cofounder of "Uber", said that his company offers one of the highly prominent and needed services created in this generation. Kalanick delivered a session about the future of transportation and its ability to make it more efficient.

Congestion in the streets has been a major growing problem in cities, the speaker said, adding roads filled with cars are not only a waste of a person’s time but are also responsible for high carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, an average person uses a car only 4% of his/her day. Uber makes the connection between these two factors to deliver a better transportation system. It introduced "Uber Pool", which embraces a sharing mobility system to make transportation more efficient, less expensive and have better utilized lands. People are currently using Uber more, according to Kalanick, because unlike underground transportation it can deliver you to your door step.

Moreover, Uber created a new reality for people’s ways of moving from one point to another, but its mission does not stop here. Kalanick suggests that Uber will be heading for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to partner with companies that will manufacture self-driving cars. When asked by Anderson if the future of Uber will be based completely on self-driving cars, Kalanick said that Uber will follow its mission in helping people commute in a more efficient and cheaper way. At this stage they see that they can continue to offer this service to help people through a better technology. However, he added, no one would really know how future years will exactly be or how the world will look like.

Governments play an important role in Uber’s mission. Their position can make or break such ideas. To be able to create self-driving cars for example, governments should want to embrace the future and plan transport to fit these thoughts. For example, Uber partnered with a government in the region to make this idea happen.

To conclude, Kalanick proposes that as an entrepreneur who went through many ups and downs, he should take responsibility of being of influence. Uber, however, is still catching up and needs to give back to the communities.
