Gen. Z - They're Coming and They'll Disrupt Governments?

Brief

Depicting an image of the year 2100, Tom Koulopoulos, CEO of Delphi Group, illustrated the shifting nature of social, political and economic structures through the post-millennial generation termed “Generation Z”. With reference to personal anecdotes, new corporate structures and estimated data projections, Koulopoulos presented a convincing argument centered around two main demands of Generation Z: transparency and connectivity.

Koulopoulos suggested that the uniqueness in Generation Z is not being one of birthright, but one of behavior which inevitably manifests across all generations. That is to say that Generation Z is not defined by demographics, but defined by an increasing demand for more open systems of communication; sustained by increasing use of technology and internet as an aspect of daily life. With the onset of open-source corporate structure, he suggested that we “Uberize government”, proposing that governments should focus on reducing friction by moving from a bureaucracy to a system addressing the outcomes and experiences of individual citizens. Furthermore, he referred to open-source systems as an inherent part of Generation Z, which is dictated by efforts of collaboration between individuals and the ability to instantly build communities working towards a single goal. He stated that “Generation Z does not expect an open, transparent, and cooperative society, but demands it.” This is a consequence of an increasingly educated population, which aims to protect the rights of freedom of access to information.

Koulopoulos acknowledged the potential of a world dominated by the ideals of Generation Z, which is one that is much more opportunistic and humanistic than ever before. However, he stated that government is not yet ready for a push in transparency, which is the main challenge for governments in a system of open source information influenced by individuals. With that said, he stated that governments should embrace the uncertainty that comes with transparency, because it allows more opportunities to citizens which have the potential to create positive movements influencing all aspects of society.
