Can Our Education System Destroy Talent?

<p>“Intelligence is dynamic interplay of engagement and ability in pursuit of personal goals.”</p> <p><strong> </strong></p> <p>Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, Scientific Director of the Imagination Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, dedicated to implementing progress in society, provided an insightful proposition of how the education system is in essential need of establishing an environment that empowers and nurtures all minds to be creative. This creativity should be in accordance with their own personal style, hence, bringing out the best in all students. Furthermore, he highlighted the current obstacles that stand as an obstruction towards the facilitation of this educational system.</p> <p>Kaufman argued that the educational environment is more about internalization rather than thinking outside the box. Therefore, he postulated a clarion call to reestablish a different educational environment that takes its starting point as the student’s talent. Furthermore, this brings forth the significance of his discussion which highlights two methods in elucidating facilitation and progression of the education system and that comes in twofold; the “beyonder characteristic” and the “imagination network.” The “beyonder characteristic” encompasses the quintessential aspects which assists a teacher to know the student well, regarding their mental and imaginative capabilities. These aspects are love of work, persistence, purpose in life, deep thinking, tolerance of mistakes, open to change, risk taking, and feeling comfortable as a minority of one. The second method is the” imagination network” which used to be known as the default mode. The imagination network brings within its compass a myriad of crucial characteristics as in day dreaming, imagining and planning the future, retrieval of deeply personal memories, personal meaning-making, monitoring one’s emotional state, reading fiction, reflective compassion and openness to experience. </p> <p>Kaufman summarized his session by declaring that the Imagination Institute is trying to find new measurements that replace the traditional IQ with a new IQ that lays the groundwork for focusing on the very fibre that helps in triggering the student’s imagination. Moreover, he placed an emphasis on the aspect of fantasy orientation, as it is a paramount factor in facilitating the education system, where we should not only focus on doers but also on daydreamers. </p>
