John F. Helliwell has his home base in the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia. From 2006 to 2017 he was also Senior Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and directed CIFAR’s program on ‘Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being’. In 2017 he was appointed Distinguished Fellow of CIFAR. Recent books include Well-Being for Public Policy (OUP, with Diener, Lucas and Schimmack, 2009), International Differences in Well-Being (OUP, edited with Diener and Kahneman, 2010), and six editions, 2012-2018, of the World Happiness Report (edited with Richard Layard and Jeffrey Sachs). He was also author of the Policy Synthesis chapter of the Global Happiness Policy Report 2019. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Officer of the Order of Canada.

The Global Happiness Policy Report is produced on an annual basis by the Global Happiness Council . This year’s report, its second edition, provides evidence and policy recommendations on best practices from around the world to promote happiness and well-being. The report contains papers by expert working groups on happiness for good governance, in areas that include, health, society, education, employment, cities, and measurements. It is designed to support policy makers searching for concrete examples and actionable policies. In this session, the authors of the report and government representatives will present the key recommendations and discuss options for government response.
