Rodrigo Marquez is a Chiliean sociologist, and coordinator of the Human Development Report UNDP Chile. He holds a Ph. D in Sociology from the Leiden University, in the Netheralnds and is a Professor of Development Sociology at the University of Valparaíso, Chile. Rodrigo has been an expert at the UNDP Country Office in Chile since 1995, working as a part of the team in charge of preparing the National Human Development Report. He has participated in all of the 11 reports published by UNDP Chile since then. Based on that experience, he has consulted to several Latin American countries, and has a few experiences in Europe and Africa. He is currently the Coordinator on this Report. The National Human development Report is highly influential in Chilean public debate, and its quality of analysis is highly recognized in other countries. During an event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, in December 2016, the Chile 2012 Human Development Report (HDR) received the 2016 Award for Excellence in Human Development Reporting for the third time. The award recognizes Chile’s work on the report, which measures subjective wellbeing (in particular “happiness”) to better understand ‘what ultimately matters’ when striving for development, and highlights how public policies can generate better social conditions to achieve happiness.
